In a winning scenario for the DC Extended Universe, superhero film Black Adam made most of it’s opening weekend box office overseas. The Warner Bros. and Seven Bucks Productions action flick, starring Dwayne Johnson, pulled an impressive $140M worldwide between Oct. 21-23, with 52.1%, or $73M, coming from international theaters.
Opening in 4,402 theaters in the U.S., Black Adam had a daily domestic box office of $26.7M on Friday, which includes Thursday night previews of $7.6M, averaging $6,065 per theater. Saturday saw a slight plunge of 11.2% to $23.7M, while Sunday dropped 30% making a daily of $16.6M.
Total domestic box office equated to $67M, accounting for 47.9% of box office. This is right on spot with projections that forecasted a domestic gross between $65m-$70M.
Critics panned the DC film with a harsh 39% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. Audiences, however, were more enthusiastic giving Black Adam an audience score of 90%. Even with the sour ratings from critics, Black Adam is the No. 1 film of the weekend and Johnson’s best opener as lead.
In other show business, the Julia Roberts and George Clooney rom-com holds No. 2 at $16.3M domestically, and $80.3M internationally. The film grossed a total box office of $96.6M — pretty good for a rom-com releasing in only 3,543 theaters.
Other films hanging on the list include the hit horror film Smile, which garnered $2.6M over the weekend, resulting in a total of $78.5M over the last 22 days since its release.
Rounding out the top 10 films are Halloween Ends at No. 4 ($2.48M), followed by Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile ($1.18M), Terrifier 2 ($545.5K), The Woman King ($530K), Don’t Worry Darling ($285K), Amsterdam ($257K), and Triangle of Sadness ($218K).
