Legendary soul singer Bill Withers has died from heart complications in Los Angeles on March 30, according to a statement released by his family on April 3. He was 81.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” said his family in a statement. “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
Withers contributed to the world with impactful songs that became classics still played on the radio today. The Grammy winner’s discography includes eight studio albums, 10 compilation albums and one live album.
The former Navy man was a three-time Grammy winner with a collection of hits that include “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Just The Two Of Us”, “Lean On Me” and one of his most famous songs, “Lovely Day”.
Some of the biggest stars have sampled his music. Will Smith did a rap version of “Just The Two Of Us” as an ode to the birth of Jaden Smith, his son with Jada Pinkett-Smith. “Lean On Me” was particularly made famous by the 1989 Morgan Freeman film of the same name.
“Use Me”, a song that was sampled by UGK and Kanye West, was a double entendre of sorts. The song is a cautionary tale and observation by Withers about an exhausting relationship and those who come to Hollywood to make it only to see the dark reality that most don’t get to that level in the music and movie business.
A true soul singer, Withers had pure talent, writing his own songs and playing instruments live. He leaves behind his wife, Marcia and two children, Kori and Todd.
RIP Mr. Withers
