Detroit rapper Big Sean has announced that he is no longer signed to G.O.O.D. Music freshly off the heels of releasing a new EP. He left the label owned by Kanye West after being on its roster since 2007 in order to start his own music entity under the Def Jam banner.
“By the way this the first project where I’m on my own label as well, no more lil dawg sh–!!! I bossed up!” said Big Sean on a Twitter post.
Legend has it that Big Sean, born Sean Anderson, muscled Kanye West for a record deal when he performed a freestyle for the multi-platinum artist that he couldn’t refuse during a brief walk from outside a radio station to West’s car in the parking lot in 2005. He would follow up with three mixtapes before releasing his debut album Finally Famous in 2011. He followed up with four other studio albums, two collaborative albums, and the mixtape Detroit.
His latest EP, What You Expect, the first project under his label FF to Def Entertainment, is a collaborative album with artist Hit-Boy. The six-track project includes features with Bryson Tiller and Lil Durk on “Loyal To A Fault,” and Babyface Ray and 42 Dugg on “Offense.” Other songs on the album include the menacing, fast-paced Detroit banger “What A Life,” and “Chaos,” “Into It,” and “The One,” which all contain signature “Big Sean motivation anthem” traits.
Despite leaving G.O.O.D. Music, Big Sean confirms that there is no bad blood between him and G.O.O.D. Music, but he made the decision for business purposes.
“That’s a forever brotherhood, but business wise, I had to start getting a bigger cut!” Big Sean continued on Twitter in response to a fan’s question. “I worked my way out that deal.”
What You Expect is available on Apple Music and all music streaming platforms.
