It’s been nearly three years since The Lion King: The Gift — six years since Lemonade — and the air is thick with anticipation for new music from Beyonce. The innovative quadruple-threat must’ve felt the vibrations because she just dropped her first single from her forthcoming project Renaissance.
Enters “Break My Soul,” an uptempo, inspiring dance track featuring the vocals of Big Freedia. The sample comes from the 2014 hit “Explode” off of the New Orleans Bounce aficionado’s debut studio album Just Be Free. Merged with the powerhouse vocals of Beyonce and poignant lyrics that match the urgency of the era, “Break My Soul” is right on time to relieve some of the pressure daunting the world today.
While the global icon has yet to release a visual for the single, she has adorned her fans with a lyric video so that we can spend all night learning the lyrics! And lyrics they are as Queen Bey goes straight for the jugular telling the poor, unfortunate souls that dare to hate, “Got motivation / I done found me a new foundation / I’m taking my salvation / And I’mma build my own foundation / You won’t break my soul.”
Whew, felt that in my soul! Beyonce goes further to give us ideas on where we can apply this new elevated mindset, calling out the 9-to-5 and the fakers. But beyond the smoky jabs, Beyonce stresses the importance of believing in yourself.
She sings, “If you don’t seek it, you won’t see it / That we all know / If you don’t think it, you won’t be it / That love ain’t yours.”
