Year 2020 has been burgeoned with tough learning experiences that have transpired over the last nine months. It doesn’t help that we’ve been stuck in the house and prevented from participating in everyday leisure activities. As the year nears its end, it is no surprise that people will be taking advantage of the opportunity to take the edge off with the upcoming holiday season.
The spooky holiday will be an interesting one. Most of the costumes that are surfacing online follow the somber themes of the coronavirus pandemic and racial fallout experienced across the globe.
Here are some of the costumes that are expected to be rampant, if not in the streets, at least on the Internet and social media.
Zoom
If there’s anything we’ve had too much of this year it would have to be too much social media and too much Zoom! While we expect to see a few creative camera costumes, we’ve heard through the grapevine that some comic fanboys will be cleverly displaying the times with costumes of The Flash character Hunter Zolomon, also known as Zoom. The costume would be a nice touch of irony and an inside joke for fans of DC Comics who know the everyday grind of suiting up just to sit in front of a laptop and log in to the almighty Zoom.
The Lovecraft Country Demonic Twins Topsy and Bopsy
The Lovecraft Country twins, Topsy and Bopsy, made their first appearance on episode 8 of the HBO series. On the TV show, the twins come to life from an illustration of Topsy, an enslaved girl, on the cover of the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. A horrific reminder of racism, it wouldn’t be shocking that some people attempt to replicate the characters for Halloween because, quite frankly, “This is America.”
Black Panther
Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing from stage 4 colon cancer in late August shook the entertainment world and inspired a whole new rebirth of interest in the Marvel film Black Panther. In honor of the actor’s legacy, we can expect fans from all over to be wearing the legendary black suit.
Karen
This not-so-funny costume marks the rise of the “Karen,” a popular pseudonym used for racist, middle-aged white women who have an affinity for calling cops. The costume comes with a signature blonde bob and sometimes, sunglasses.
Social Justice & Unity
On a serious note, some people will be using the Halloween occasion to bring to awareness the constant struggle to end social injustice and systemic racism. Themes of wearing shirts with the faces of victims killed by police and all-black outfits is sure to be a part of this year’s Halloween attire.
Here’s some other popular costumes that are surfacing online:
Toilet Paper
COVID-19
Tiger King
The Watchman
Lysol
Bleach
Outbreak Suits
Will you be celebrating the holidays this year? If so, what will you be wearing for this Halloween?
