The class of 2020 is very special. Not only does the class mark the end of an era, but it also presents a new beginning for most.
With the class of 2020 forever linked to the coronavirus pandemic, Barack Obama released a virtual commencement speech to help the next generation make it through. In the video, he gives students three pointers on life as they embark on the new normal of life.
His first word of advice is don’t be afraid. Obama cited that the world has gone through tumultuous times before, naming slavery, civil war, famine, disease, the Great Depression and 9/11 as some of the most challenging times in U.S. history. He advised young people to learn from past mistakes and figure out how to make things better for the future.
His second word of advice is to do what you think is right. “Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy. That’s how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way,” Obama said. He hopes that values like honesty, respect for others and hard work will guide the generation so that they will be a part of the solution, instead of the problem.
His third word of advice is to build a community. “No one does big things by themselves,” he said. Obama reiterated that, despite our differences, the unity and connection between human beings will be the way to overcome any situation.
