The New Birth Missionary Baptist Church is helping couples who have delayed marriage due to financial barriers jump the broom.
Twelve couples gathered around the popular Atlanta church’s pulpit on Sunday morning to get married.
In celebration of Black History Month, the theme of the big ceremony was “A Wedding in Wakanda”, an ode to the successful Disney film Black Panther. Those who sat in the audience wore African-styled clothing in honor of the theme.
Famous singer Kelly Price performed at the grand event.
The Senior Pastor, Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant, started the wedding program “The Vow” to assist couples who would like to have a wedding ceremony but have financial restraints.
An average wedding can cost $33,931, according to The Knot’s 2018 Real Weddings Study.
“We wanted to remove the financial barriers that would burden or even deter couples from having a wedding ceremony,” said Bryant, “Marriage not only signifies a commitment between two people, but also is an outward demonstration of a commitment and bond that symbolizes God’s love for the church.”
The couples have to go through a counseling series in order to qualify for the program.
New Birth Missionary has sponsored “The Vow” going on two years.
