Sister, Sister, Moesha, Girlfriends, The Game, Half & Half, One On One and The Parkers will be available on Netflix to the delight of many customers.
The move comes as part of a new diversity initiative by Netflix led by Bradley Edwards and Jasmyn Lawson to support content that has “Strong Black Leads” during a time where systemic racism is being challenged. The streaming giant released a short promo video featuring actors and showrunners of the TV shows.
Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Essence Atkins, Tia and Tamera Mowry, Jackee Harry, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Flex Alexander, Tim Reid, Mara Brock Akil, Golden Brooks and Reggie Hayes were among the actors that cheerfully made the announcement. Brandy Norwood, who was the star of Moesha, and Mo’Nique, who led The Parkers, were noticeably absent from the video, although some of their castmates were present.
The shows will be available on the platform starting in August, with the shows rolling out throughout the weeks into September.
The acquisition of the original content is in response to a high demand by subscribers. All of the TV series have ties to Viacom, the media conglomerate that owns Paramount Pictures and CBS. Let’s hope that our favorite actors will be getting a nice serving of that royalty pie. #CutTheCheck
