New Line Cinema is in the business of reimagining. Recently, it was announced that two classic films would be remade, Set It Off and House Party.
Set It Off is a classic hood tale about four friends who experience a series of injustices that influence them to take things into their own hands through the form of robbery heists. The original film that came out in 1996 starred Vivica A. Fox, Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah and Kimberly Elise.
Issae Rae (Insecure) is set to be in the new version. Rae’s production company will be producing the reimagining of the film. The script will be penned by writers Nina Gloster (Star) and Syreeta Singleton (Black Monday).
In the same breath, the director of Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road music video, Calmatic, has been brought on to direct the reimagining of House Party. This will be Calmatic’s feature directorial debut.
Originally released in 1990, House Party was about two friends who go through a great adventure to create the biggest house party ever. Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) directed and wrote the 90s film, which starred Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin, better known as Kid ‘N Play.
The House Party script has already been completed by Atlanta writers Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover. Lebron James’ Springhill Entertainment will be producing the film.
Now, the exciting question is who will be cast to play in these classic films. Rapper Young M.A. just put in her bid to play Queen Latifah’s role as Cleo in Set It Off . So, who would play the other ladies?
