One hurdle don’t stop the whole show. Comedian and actress Amanda Seales will be hosting the 2020 BET Awards set to air June 27. The music special will commemorate BET’s 40th year anniversary and the award show’s 20th year.
BET’s choice is a great one considering the times. Seales has always been vocal about the injustices of the black community, thus her voice will be essential in communicating the current landscape of America.
“BET was created to stand at the forefront of black culture. We have made strides over the past two decades to create a space where black creativity, culture, and art have the opportunity to get the celebration it deserves in a world where it is systematically muted,” said Connie Orlando, EVP Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET.
Seales is best known for her original show Smart Funny & Black, podcast Small Doses and role as Tiffany DuBois on HBO’s Insecure. She recently made headlines for voluntarily leaving talk show The Real. BET’s pre-show will be hosted by Erica Ash and Terrence J.
The network also announced nominations that include nom lead Drake with six nods, followed by Roddy Rich, Megan Thee Stallion, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, DaBaby, Nicki Minaj and Lizzo.
Performers will include Alicia Keys, Chloe X Halle, D Smoke, Lil Wayne, SiR, Summer Walker, Usher, and more.
The BET Awards 2020 will air on CBS and BET at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, June 27.
