Creative Arts Emmy Awards: ‘Carpool Karaoke’ Wins Over Beyonce’s ‘Homecoming’

Winners of the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were announced on Saturday, Sept.14 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The event is the first of two nights kicking off the 71st Emmys, which Fox will broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 PM ET.

The majority of awards for the Emmys are handed out on these two nights.

Sponsored by the Television Academy, the event highlights achievements in documentary, reality, variety special, choreography for variety or reality program, animated program and short form animation and interactive program.

Presenters included Terry Crews, Jeff Goldblum, Seth Green, Wanda Sykes and Diane Guerrero, to name a few.

There were some head scratching moments of the night. Surprisingly, Leaving Neverland, a documentary based on the sexual abuse allegations against Michael Jackson, won an award for Outstanding Documentary Or Non-Fiction Special.

Pose definitely was a disappointing snub.  Informative and unapologetically real, Pose delivers entertainment value that is not only deserving of an award, but several more seasons, as well.

Another perplexing moment of the night for many was attributed to the blatant dismissiveness of Beyonce’s achievement of creating a music special that not only was genius in creativity, but also was the biggest conversation on social media and in pop culture this year, period.  The Beyhive started buzzing when word spread that the songstress’ Netflix concert documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce did not win one award, despite being nominated for six Emmys.

Beyonce’s Homecoming was a love letter to women empowerment, an ode to black culture and bow to the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation.  Beyonce even took it a step further and gave us an inside look at her preparation process, which consisted of her getting into shape just mere months after giving birth to twins.

James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney won Outstanding Variety Special to the dismay of Beyonce fans.

Yet, the TV Academy awarded Outstanding Variety Special to Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney.  It’s a good show, but let’s be real.  It doesn’t take much work to sit in a car and sing terribly to karaoke songs.  Try dancing in coordination with a whole band of 100 people in high heels in front of a live audience, while staying pretty and hitting every note in every single song after just recently giving birth.

She also lost to Springsteen On Broadway for Outstanding Directing, Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette for Outstanding Writing and RuPaul’s Drag Race for Outstanding Costumes and Production Design.

The fact that snubs like these continue to happen proves that, for some, mediocre is the high standard and will be rewarded until a new regime takes over.  Even further, it speaks volumes to the unavoidable irrelevancy of award shows.  More and more, young people are tuning out from these political gatekeeper type shows that take pleasure in snubbing well-deserved talent.
