Jeannie Mai’s life is something like a fairytale if you didn’t know the whole story. She recently got engaged with her rapper boyfriend Jeezy and is planning her happily ever after.
But, believe it or not, the talk show host had a tough time recovering from divorce after a 10-year marriage. She didn’t just bounce back the next day. It was more like a year. Jeannie Mai actually had to put in some work to get to where she is now.
She gave her fans some pointers on how she was able to learn to love again on her YouTube channel Hello Hunnay with Jeannie Mai.
“After divorce, I specifically took some time to be with myself,” she said in the YouTube video. “I knew that coming out of divorce the last thing I should be doing is trying to date.”
The first thing she had to do was quiet the noise and be at peace. That meant staying at home and putting her phone down so that she could hear her inner voice.
Jeannie Mai would take long baths or write in her journal to get her emotions out. She also took initiative to pinpoint her fears and mentally planned how she would handle them so that they wouldn’t shock her.
Later, Jeannie Mai started being active in exercise, cooking and finally, a little dating. To help her progress along, she took the time to clearly define what she wanted in her next partner. Her must-haves included thorough communication, brutal honesty, respect, understanding, vision, forgiveness, unity and healthy love.
The star got teary-eyed talking about Jeezy, who she affectionately calls J.
“When I actually sat down on November 28, 2018 with J, the minute I sat down and we locked eyes — I just like immediately knew that he was special,” she said. “I could see right away that he had been broken like me.”
Ultimately, Jeannie Mai concludes that falling in love with yourself is the best way to bounce back from heartbreak.
