On the cusp of a global pandemic with the spread of coronavirus and the unified tribulation of worldwide citizens who have been advised and ordered to stay in their homes, we’ve all had a lot of time to think.
For some, the unfortunate circumstances present an opportunity to take a break from the day to day, but for others, the solitude is a daunting battle. Toronto artist Delyn Grey knows exactly how isolation can feel. In her new single “Battle” she tackles the taboo topic of mental captivity and depression.
Influenced by the greats of R&B and grunge rock, she beautifully sings dark lyrics over classic piano, a combination that is reminiscent of the soulful sounds of Adele and the painful vulnerability of Kurt Cobain. Her truth is a genuine movement for thought-provoking musical honesty.
“When I turned 17 I fell into the heaviest depression, ever,” said Grey. “I chose to take advantage of it, and what was trying to break me. Battle, among other tracks, is the product of my resistance, acceptance, and fight during that time.”

She continued, “Vocalizing my frustration, fear, and anger is what eventually got me through it. My hope is that this song will find people that need it, just like it found me.”
The music video that accommodates the single stays true to the theme of the emotional song. A black and white visual shows Grey alone in a room as she braces for the battle against her own thoughts and emotions. True to the experience of people who suffer from this silent enemy.
Produced by Grey and Justin Abedin, “Battle” is the first single off of Grey’s forthcoming EP Disappointment Girl, coming soon to streaming platforms.

Grey’s single comes at a time when the world is looking for ways to channel their mental angst. Her ability to give a transparent account of her experience is more the reason for fans to flock to her music.
“I want to make music that’s fearless,’ said Grey. “I don’t want people to hear it and think I play it safe. I want people to listen to it and go, ‘That was heavy. Didn’t think it would hit me like that’.”
The colorful canvas of Grey’s powerful musical style is one that is free of stereotypical stigmas and fantastical bells and whistles. The direct effect is that people of all ages can listen and relate to Grey’s music.
“The cool thing is that I’ve had 12-year-old Disney-crazed kids and 55-year-old classic rock fans tell me they love it. I think any kind of music fan can find something in my music because it’s truthful. I put everything I have into it, man. It’s the real stuff.”
