The African American Film Critics Association Announces Winners, “US” Chosen For Best Film Of 2019

The African American Film Critics Association announced the winners of the AAFCA Awards on Tuesday, Dec. 10, naming Jordan Peele’s US as the Best Film of 2019.

The other top 10 film winners included Netflix’s Dolemite Is My Name, Warner Bros. Just Mercy, Neon’s Clemency, Netflix’s The Irishman, Universal Pic Queen & Slim, A24’s Waves, Parasite and Atlantics tie at no. 8, A24’s The Farewell, and Focus Features’ Harriet.

Eddie Murphy earned Best Actor for his role in Dolemite Is My Name, while Lupita Nyong’o took the Best Actress award.

Universal Pictures’ Queen & Slim, penned by Lena Waithe and directed by Melina Matsoukas, received the Impact Award. In the independent realm, The Last Black Man in San Francisco won the Best Independent Film.

AAFCA recognizes the achievements of people of color in the arts and entertainment industry. The black film critic organization is in its 8th year.
