Showtime has canceled Ziwe as part of a programming reconstructing under Chris McCarthy, the CEO and president of MTV. The network confirmed the new development early on Wednesday (April 5).
Ziwe Fumudoh, the comedian at the center of the satire style interview series, hosted the variety show for two seasons before the cancellation. Topics on the series covered a range of taboo subjects regarding race, politics, culture, and societal standards that often made the star go viral on social media. Ziwe would also perform musical numbers and sketches to coincide with the interviews.
The first season premiered on May 9, 2021 with Showtime electing for a six-episode series order. After a successful first season, Showtime upped the series to 12 episodes. The second season kicked off on April 29, 2022 jumping head first into the controversy surrounding Critical Race Theory, featuring special guests Charlamagne Tha God, Amanda Stenberg, Nore Davis, Ike Ufomadu, and Jocelyn Bioh.
Broadcasted on Christmas Day, the final episode titled “Juneteenth” starred Wayne Brady and explored the commercialization of the more accurate Independence Day for those formerly enslaved in the United States.
The A24 Television and Generation Ziwe production was a cross between the radical confrontational dialogue of Borat and the ironic hilarity of The Chappelle Show.
Ziwe’s ascension is catapulted by an impressive resume that includes a role on Succession and prolific writing credits for her 2017 television series Baited with Ziwe, along with Desus & Mero, The Rundown with Robin Thede, and Dickinson. Ziwe currently voices the character of Amelia on Fox’s animated series The Great North.
