The Golden Globes is giving fresh with their latest host selection. Jerrod Carmichael will be hosting the 80th Golden Globe Awards, according to a statement from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” Helen Hoehne, president of HFPA said in a statement. “His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live. Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”
Carmichael is fresh off the cusp of winning an Emmy award for his HBO Max stand-up comedy Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, where he revealed he is a part of the LGBT community. The Carmichael Show creator joins ranks with a list of high-profile talent that previously hosted the Golden Globes, such as Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler.
Carmichael’s list of credentials are extensive. The Laugh Factory veteran was featured in Jay-Z’s 2017 music video for “Moonlight,” headlined his on television sitcom, The Carmichael Show, for three seasons, and executive produced the Hulu comedy series Ramy. In 2021, he was a Grand Jury Prize nominee at the Sundance Film Festival for his drama feature On the Count of Three, starring Tiffany Haddish, Christopher Abbott, J.B. Smoove, Lavell Crawford, and Henry Winkler.
HFPA has been hard at work to rejuvenate the image of the Golden Globes by making more diverse selections in its hosting roles and shaking up its business structure behind the scenes. Adding Carmichael not only checks off several boxes, but it opens doors for other historically unconventional talent to have a chance at manning the platform.
Set to premiere Jan. 10, 2023, the Golden Globes will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Southern California and will air on NBC and their streaming platform, Peacock. Live entertainment production company Jesse Collins Entertainment is producing alongside Dick Clark Productions and HFPA.
