Tia Mowry takes a positive approach to a life-altering transition that can leave some devastated. The classy actress, who gained her notoriety as an adorable twin on the long-running television sitcom Sister, Sister, addressed the ending of her marriage to All American: Homecoming actor Cory Hardrict.
“My marriage was a success,” Mowry says in an interview on Today with Hoda & Jenna. “I look at it as like a curriculum, when you’re in college or high school. You’re learning, you’re growing, you’re evolving, you’re creating. And I was able to create with Cory some beautiful, amazing children.”
The Family Reunion actress, who married Hardrict, 43, in 2008 and had two children together, likens marriage to a curriculum in college, giving her an insightful perspective about the experience. Once the stages of learning are done with maturation, there’s a point where it is time to evolve and graduate. Sometimes, that graduation means uncoupling. Still, Mowry feels like the marriage was an overall success.
Mowry adds, “I feel like [when] people look at marriage, that success means longevity. No, at the end of the day, it’s are they happy? Are they thriving? Are they growing? I feel like that is what is most important. It’s not about staying in something because however long you were in that situation, that equals success. It’s about, really again, are you happy?”
The need to evolve came through a series of events. Mowry, 44, began to experience her awakening after losing her grandmother and her sister Tamera Mowry-Housley’s niece, 18-year-old Alaina Housley, to gun violence. She had to take a moment to look within herself and understand her emotions. Therapy also helped her work out her thoughts to understand what she needed to do. Her answer was self-love and the reality of life’s brevity.
When asked when did she know it was time to end the marriage, Mowry answered, “I feel like when I started to focus on myself. There was this sadness, and I knew that life is short.”
