Everyone is saying that GloRilla’s success happened overnight. But, let the Memphis, Tennessee rapper tell it, her time was long overdue and now that she’s arrived, the “Tomorrow” rapper is capitalizing on her wins.
Over the weekend (Nov. 11), she dropped a full EP, Anyways, Life’s Great… that includes her viral and newly Grammy-nominated hit, “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)”, featuring Hitkidd. An acronym for “F*ck N*gga Free,” the song plays as a liberating anthem for those freshly out of a toxic situation living their best lives. The single was a catalyst to discovery of GloRilla’s inner workings, where beyond the glitz of hood fabulosity lies a real spitter with a fragile temperament.
It’s all about the comeback for Big Glo, born Gloria Hallelujah Woods, who is quick to put someone in their place on songs, such as “Nut Quick,” while realizing and appreciating her good fortune on songs like “Blessed.”
That same sentiment is evident in her second anthem, “Tommorow 2,” featuring Cardi B where the hook rings, “Can’t say yo’ name up in my songs, might not f*ck wit’ you tomorrow / Can get my feelings hurt today, I won’t give a f*ck tomorrow / Ain’t f*cked up about no credit score, I might be rich as f*ck tomorrow / Every day the sun won’t shine, but that’s why I love tomorrows.”
GloRilla’s new project has nine entries with hardly any features besides the major bag investment in Cardi B and childhood friend Niki Pooh on “Get That Money,” a tit-for-tat song about exploiting partners who exploit you. Yo Gotti, founder of CMG, gives GloRilla an alley oop on the bass-bumping “Blessed,” although his credit is not readily listed, assuring that GloRilla gets all the glory.
GloRilla’s appeal on this project lies in her ability to be relatable, real, and the fun part, ratchet. Living in her truth and spilling the tea in her intriguing storytelling lyrics against original production makes her a notch above the current competitive hip hop landscape in which many artists are neatly packaged using tried and true music samples, physical aesthetics, and run-of-the-mill bars. Make no mistake, GloRilla is the antithesis of all that.
