It Was All A Dream: Dreamville’s JID Bares His Cross For The American Dream On Official Video For “Kody Blu 31”

The Black American dream is alive and well in JID’s official music video for “Kody Blu 31” from his groundbreaking third studio album, The Forever Story.

Raven B. Varona directs the simplistic, but virtuously poignant visual that shows the Atlanta-raised rapper accomplishing the ultimate goal of any person of color who has been in the ring with poverty — home ownership. It’s a far-stretch from the cap rap that fooled many with illusions of gang ties and grandeur, skipping over any humble beginnings to get straight to the money, cars, and women.

Ignited by the all-too familiar gospel hymn, “I’ll Fly Away,” made popular over the years by the likes of Gloria Spencer, Hezekiah Walker, Tamela Mann, and even the Timbaland championed singing group, Playa, featuring Static Major, JID and Varona seamlessly embark on the story of a family in the tree-laden south.

At one point, JID carries the “home for sale” sign across the lawn, resembling the historic image of mankind baring their cross. The music video continues to show JID attending a family gathering that ends with a photo opportunity in the backyard.

JID is clearly from the breed of the J. Coles — he’s signed to Dreamville in association with Interscope– Kendrick Lamars, and so forth, pairing his lyrical wit with a very resounding consciousness and southern appeal.

Released on Aug. 26, The Forever Story contains features from Johnta Austin, Lil Wayne, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Ravyn Lenae, and Eryn Allen Kane. His generational peers also make an appearance on two standout tracks of the album.

On “Surround Sound,” JID samples the hip hop classic “Ms. Fat Booty” by Mos Def, inviting 21 Savage and Baby Tate to contribute to a savage switchboard flow that transitions midway through the song. Lil Durk is featured on the familial testament, “Bruddanem,” a hallmark single that embodies the essence of The Forever Story as an ode to JID’s family and a toast to better days.

The Forever Story is available on music streaming platforms now.
