Viola Davis Stars In ‘The Woman King,’ Directed By Gina Prince-Bythewood [Official Trailer]

Updated: There’s a new female warrior film on the horizon, and it’s in the vein of the Wakanda themed Black Panther pic that showed strong, Black women in militant roles. The official teaser for The Woman King previewed during a commercial break from the BET Awards, while the official trailer was released by Sony Pictures on July 6.

A story from Reckless scribe Dana Stevens and famed director Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Woman King is loosely based on the true story of the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Starring Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis, who plays General Nanisca, the official trailer shows the fierce actress leading a conglomerate of African women warriors training for the ultimate confrontation against colonizers.

The Woman King is due for a Sept. 16 release.
