Grammy-nominated rapper Kodak Black was handed down a hefty three year and eight month sentence in federal prison for weapon charges from the court on Wednesday. Prosecutors were aiming for a ten year sentence.
The Broward County rapper was sentenced for attempting to purchase weapons under false pretenses regarding his criminal record, a federal offense. Apparently, Kodak provided misinformation on the Firearms Transaction Record, a form required to purchase weapons, about not facing any criminal charges.
Kodak already had two pending cases against him. One for sexual misconduct in South Carolina, and the other for unlawful possession of marijuana and a weapon being in his car as he and his team drove across the U.S. border to a performance in Canada.
The 22-year-old rapper allegedly tried to purchase multiple handguns on two different occasions at a Hialeah store. U.S. District Court Judge Federico Moreno issued the sentence. The judge had no mercy on Kodak Black.
“Young people do stupid things,” Moreno said in court. “The problem is that you’ve been doing stupid things since you were 15.”
Kodak’s defense attorney, Brad Cohen, said that the rapper attempted or purchased the guns for self-protection as a response to threats he had been receiving.
Earlier this month, reports circulated that the “Tunnel Vision” rapper had been involved in a prison fight in which he assaulted a guard, landing the officer in the hospital.
Kodak’s team negates the allegation saying that he was drugged and coerced to fight. The judge decided to not consider the fight when determining the sentence.
Kodak was arrested back in May just before his performance at the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami.
