Memphis law enforcement held a press conference revealing new information about Young Dolph’s case on Wednesday. U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller confirmed that three suspects were arrested in the murder of rapper Young Dolph thanks to the Memphis Police, who took his death personally, and a number of tips.
An award was offered for tips leading to the fugitives involved in the case. Upon the announcement of the award, authorities received over 500 tips that led them across the southeast, including Indianapolis, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Hampton, VA.
On Tuesday, a tip led them to 23-year-old Justin Johnson, known as Straight Drop, at a truck stop in Brazil, Indiana. Another suspect, Shundale Barnett, who was in the vehicle that Johnson was driving when he was stopped by police, assisted Johnson in running from the law and faces charges for being an accessory.
A third person, Cornelius Smith, was taken into custody in Mississippi, later being extradited back to Memphis. He is being held on several charges, including convicted felon with a handgun, theft of property in the amount of $10,000 or more, and first-degree murder charges. More suspects are expected to be brought in.
Johnson is a repeat offender who has a history of charges resulting from aggravated rape, aggravated robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm. Many people speculated on his involvement with Dolph’s murder, piecing his relation to the late rapper on social media. A screenshot of Dolph in a music video showed Johnson standing behind him.
More suspects could possibly be attained as the investigation continues, according to Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis.
“It is very possible. Once we continue to conduct this investigation, there’s no telling where it could potentially lead,” Davis said. “There could be other individuals who are implicated in this particular homicide.”
