Peacock has released the official trailer for the much-anticipated Bel-Air, and from the looks of it, we’re in for a major treat. The dramatic retelling of the classic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air delves into the delicate intricacies of race, class, and culture, while giving the backstory to Will’s (Jabari Banks) transition from Philly to Bel-Air.
Beware. Those expecting comedy and a look-a-like cast to the original are in for a big surprise. The trailer shows a different type of Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes), who is still a man to take seriously, but is also more slender and richer in melanin. While Cassandra Freeman, who plays Aunt Viv, gives a slice of familiarity to the original Vivian Banks played by Janet Hubert in the 1990s.
Some other characters that were renovated in the Morgan Cooper reimagining include Geoffrey (Jimmy Akingbola), the butler, and the Banks siblings, Hilary (Coco Jones), Carlton (Olly Sholotan), and Ashley (Akira Akbar).
Carlton doesn’t appear to be the goofy and nerdy character as he was in The Fresh Prince, while Geoffrey seems to have a bigger influence beyond just inserting snarky comments here and there.
The series is set to premiere on Peacock with three new episodes on Feb. 13, Super Bowl weekend. We’re here for it!
