Billionaire and former mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg is taking steps to enter the 2020 presidential race.
Sources from Bloomberg’s camp confirmed that he will be filing paperwork to ensure that he is added to the ballot ahead of the Friday (Nov. 8) filing deadline in Alabama. The New York Times
The decision comes at a time where many Democratic constituents are concerned that none of the current Democratic presidential nominees are capable of taking on Trump.
“Mike is increasingly concerned that the current field of candidates is not well positioned to do that,” spokesman for Bloomberg, Howard Wolfson said. “If Mike runs he would offer a new choice to Democrats built on a unique record running America’s biggest city, building a business from scratch and taking on some of America’s toughest challenges as a high-impact philanthropist.”
Bloomberg, 77, is still considering whether he wants to enter the race.
“I believe I would defeat [Trump] in a general election,” Bloomberg said back in March. “But I am clear eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field.”
