Fresh off of a successful hit with Venom and a suspenseful teaser trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home coming to theaters Dec. 17, Sony has released an official trailer and release date for the much-anticipated Morbius.
Starring Jared Leto, the pic follows doctor Michael Morbius, who was missing for two months, as he transforms into the conflicted Marvel character with supernatural powers.
The trailer drops a few hints that there will be a merging of storylines within the Spider-Man universe. One conspicuous reference appears in a clip showing the newspaper Daily Bugle with the headline “Dr. Michael Morbius apprehended for ‘Vampire Murder,'” along with sub-headlines referencing Black Cat and Rhino, extending storylines from the Amazing Spider-Man.
At another point in the trailer, a subliminal reference to Venom is made as a detective recalls “that thing in San Francisco” and Michael Keaton makes a cameo as what most fans speculate is the Vulture from Homecoming.
The various Easter eggs suggest that Sony is taking cues from Marvel’s blueprint of merging worlds and highlighting villain stories.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the cast includes Leto, Keaton, Tyrese Gibson, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, and Jared Harris. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the screenplay.
Morbius will be in theaters on Jan. 28, 2022.
