News of the trailblazing hip hop trio The Fugees disbanding to follow individual pursuits was one of the saddest days in hip hop history. No one said it better than Jay-Z’s “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love)” where he raps,
“Ain’t no love, in the heart of the city | Ain’t no love, in the heart of town |
And then the Fugees gon’ break up, now everyday I wake up | Somebody got something to say.”
The last time Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and Ms. Lauryn Hill made an appearance together was almost two decades ago. So, when the group announced that they would be going on a reunion tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their groundbreaking 1996 album The Score, fans couldn’t believe their ears.
An impromptu concert at Pier 17 in New York City on Wednesday (Sept. 22) solidified the news with all three members showing up for the occasion. The Fugees performed a select number of tracks from The Score that included hit songs “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
It wouldn’t be surprising if the world tour will serve as a platform to dispel rumors about the trio and to bring awareness to Haiti. At the kickoff concert, the group had no trouble addressing the storied past of The Fugees with Ms. Lauryn Hill attributing the dismantling of The Fugees to letting success go to their heads. In addition, Wyclef addressed the current state of the Haitian community pertaining to the troublesome times of the country and the treatment of Haitian people by U.S. Border Patrol.
The Fugees will tour 12 cities around the world with the next date scheduled in Chicago on Tuesday (Nov. 2), followed by dates in Oakland, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, Newark, Washington D.C., Paris, London, and locations in Nigeria and Ghana. Sponsored by Live Nation and Diaspora Calling, The Fugees have partnered with Global Citizen to intertwine philanthropic initiatives with the tour.
