Being a human being can be tough, especially when bad news bears. When the chips are down or the rain pours, you can take the reins of your emotions (and even your life) by changing your whole frequency. What are the keys to feeling better immediately? Gratitude, a positive mindset, love, and self-awareness — and in that order.
Here are four songs that reflect all of these elements and will lift your spirit real quick:
Ashanti – Happy
“Happy” introduced Ashanti as the princess of Irv Gotti and Ja Rule led label Murder Inc. Released as part of her 2002 self-titled album, “Happy” was a feel-good hit single among a set of darker mood singles, such as “Baby,” “Foolish” and “Unfoolish.”
Destiny’s Child – Happy Face
“Happy Face” was a hidden gem among a sea of chart-toppers from the 2001 Destiny’s Child album Survivor. The number 10 track summed up the bright future this harmonizing trio was destined for — today, the group is considered one of the highest selling girl groups in history. Survivor included singles “Bootylicious,” “Independent Women, Pt. 2,” the Bee Gees cover “Emotion,” and their No. 1 hit “Survivor.”
Pharrell – Happy
Another happy song that lifts the spirit is the 2013 Pharrell Williams produced song called “Happy.” The song was featured on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack and Pharrell’s 2014 album G I R L. Pharrell said he wrote the song after coming out of a mental resistance that caused him to have a period of writer’s block. It all worked out because the song went 11x platinum in Australia, certified Diamond in Canada, Mexico, Germany, and France, and No. 1 on over 40 different music charts around the world. Talk about having a reason to be happy!
Mary J. Blige – Be Happy
Mary J. Blige is known for making soul-stirring, therapeutic music that is best for reflection. Emotions range from empowered to sad, lonely, and even heartbroken. But, “Be Happy” hit different. “Be Happy” was cushioned between songs “Mary Jane (All Night Long),” “My Life,” and “I’m Goin’ Down,” on the 1994 multi-platinum album My Life — Mary’s second studio album. The uptempo beat, along with Mary’s sultry R&B voice, made you feel happy, while simultaneously acknowledging that there’s a lot of work to do and things to consider.
