This past week we have been graced by the film gods with quite a few heavy hitting movie trailers including Disney’s Cruella, the Shudder Original LUCKY, and another rendition of the video game inspired Mortal Kombat. The latest trailers are great selections to look forward to as we all clamor for more entertainment to escape the gambit of real world issues. Check out the trailers and my thoughts below:
Cruella (2021)
It’s refreshing to see a live-action Disney movie that isn’t a remake. There really hasn’t been one live-action remake that has been even close to being as good as the original animated version, but that’s just my opinion. Cruella is the origin story of 101 Dalmatians villain, Cruella de Vil.
In this version, Emma Stone fills the iconic role putting on her best English accent, fabulous hairdo, and extraordinary outfits. Many people on the Internet have been making comparisons to this origin story with that of DC’s villain The Joker with the trailer showing a huge fire, evil laughter, and overall giving off an eerie vibe. The cast includes Emma Thompson (Men in Black: International), Mark Strong (1917), Emily Beecham (Outside the Wire), and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place).
Cruella is expected to be released May 28, 2021.
LUCKY (2021)
Starring Brea Grant, LUCKY is a thriller by horror hub Shudder Original that follows the story of a woman who fights a mysterious man trying to kill her in her home every single night. Natasha Kermani directed the pic penned by Grant.
Premiering at the SXSW 2020 Film Festival, the pic stars Hunter C. Smith (The Adventures of Benjamin Pike), Kristina Klebe (Hellboy), and Kausar Mohammed (Silicon Valley).
From the trailer, it feels like a time loop type of movie with a mix of psychological horror, and it definitely has me intrigued. I feel like this is a movie that is best going into without knowing too much about before watching it, so I will leave it at that.
Lucky is available on Shudder Original now.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
One of the world’s most famous fighting video games is getting another movie, and this one looks intense. From the trailer, all your favorite characters are returning, such as Sub-Zero, Lui Kang, Kabal, Jax, Scorpion, and many more.
The plot follows MMA fighter Cole Young as he gathers together the greatest fighters in the world to compete in a fighting tournament known as Mortal Kombat. Sub-Zero is featured throughout the trailer as he uses his freezing capabilities to wreck havoc on his opponents. The fighting sequences look pretty gruesome and fun. I can’t wait.
Mortal Kombat is set to release April 16, 2021.
There’s plenty of trailers on the marquee for excited movie watchers, but these stood out beyond the much talked about Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the ongoing debate about Godzilla vs. Kong.
