Nowadays, rap seems to be full of ill-fated influence and suggestive marketing and it’s becoming more apparent everyday thanks to social media. From the excessive spending to the constant brand pushing of purses, clothes, cars, and jewelry, hip hop has become more about the look of it instead of the actual music and its message.
When a rapper comes to the realization that the life perpetuated by some hip hop music is not productive to a fruitful, long-lasting existence, it’s like a coming-to-the-light moment that gets a nod of approval from the elders and inspires the youngsters to think twice before they make a decision. Lil Bibby had his moment when he realized that trying to impress people, who are most likely strangers, with designer clothing and excessive spending was a bit ludicrous.
“Trying to keep up with the Joneses,” Lil Bibby said in the Vlad TV interview. “Couple of thousand dollars on sweaters, couple of thousand on an outfit. You know, I look up and I look at my closet and then I look at my bank account, I’m like, ‘Man, this sh– ain’t right.'”
After having a conversation with fellow rapper Kevin Gates, he came to the conclusion that spending money on expensive fits was a fast way to poverty. Gates, on the other hand, limits his spending to about $300 a month and only purchases a Nike jogging suit, Polo shirts and Air Force Ones. He shared with Bibby that he could care less about what people thought as long as he had the security of a full bank account.
Following in his footsteps, Bibby soon started changing his spending habits to stack his pockets over stocking his closets. That required him to reduce his designer clothing expenditures. Now, the rapper relies on an outfit that consists of a black t-shirt and a couple of chains.
His next step was to make more money than he spends. Bibby saved his money from his performances and learned about real estate, something that brought in more money than his rap career. He purchased some properties and the money started rolling in. It was a good investment because it made him a millionaire and gave him the option to retire from rap altogether.
“I don’t got to wake up and do sh—,” Lil Bibby said.
