Sony announced earlier today that they will be introducing PS5 or the Playstation 5 during the holidays in 2020.
It appears the most innovative aspect of the PS5 will be the game controllers. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan posted, “Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.”
The games will come as 100GB optical discs and can be read on the installed 4K Blu-ray drive. The new PS5 controllers will have speakers and the ability to make the player feel resistance when playing games with new adaptive triggers. PS5 controllers can be charged using USB Type-C.
Upgrades to the drive will result in faster speed and the ability to save more space. Ray tracing will be available via its GPU acceleration. Players will also be able to change the campaign of a game from single-player to multi-player at any time.
“Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time,” said the PS5 system architect Mark Cerny. “Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player you just jump right into whatever you like.”
Game titles for PS5 have yet to be released.
It looks like the PS5 is applying pressure to the upcoming Xbox Scarlett, which was announced at the E3 2019 conference.
