Having Election Burnout? Yung Gravy’s To The Rescue With His Sonically Convivial Album ‘Gasanova’

The first time the MouthSoap had a rendezvous with Yung Gravy’s music was in 2017 when a University of California – Davis student hopped in the whip with the team and played the song “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot.”

The Minnesota-bred rapper’s full, deep voice came over the speakers, “Gravy off probation, fuck a PO. Fuck a piss test.” Our ears piped up in interest. A comical R&B riff, made popular by singers such as Teddy Pendergrass, Jodeci and Johnny Gill, warbled out just before a mature voice dropped “Gravy train.” Then, the bass hit. The song was full of animated lyrics complemented with creative adlibs. Immediately, it was apparent that this rapper had the “IT” factor.

Unlike so many other rappers that have come and gone since the invention of SoundCloud and Instagram, the six foot seven inches tall Yung Gravy stood out like a brand new gold Miami cuban link chain. After listening to Yung Gravy’s EP Snow Cougar, the MouthSoap was officially on the gravy train.

We proactively dug in the crates to indulge in his eclectic discography, which included EPs Mr. Clean (2016) and Thanksgiving’s Eve (2016). Song by song, the rapper once known as Jimmy Continental churned out well-timed bangers filled with hard-hitting bass and 808s.

Good thing we got on to the gravy train when we did because now Yung Gravy is big time. The 2019 release of Sensational, Yung Gravy’s first full-length album, landed on the radar of both, the hood and the suburban moms he loves to rap about.

Rocking his signature shades with 1980s-inspired button downs, Yung Gravy strolled into 2020 with a finesse on his mind. He started the year dropping bbno$ collaboration album Baby Gravy 2, blessing his listeners with songs such as, “Off the Goop” and “shining on my ex.” But, the gravy train didn’t stop there.

With one more quarter left in 2020, Yung Gravy “hit us with the hee” when he released his second full-length album Gasanova in October. Full of spicy lyrics and zesty beats, Yung Gravy parses out hot tracks on Gasanova like a veteran.

To think, most of these songs were created at the top of his head in a series of carefree freestyle sessions. “I’ve been doing a lot more toplining, where you just kind of go in the studio and freestyle and create flows just like that,” Yung Gravy said in an interview with The MouthSoap. “I like going in the studio and bullshitting for a while and figuring out what you like.”

It’s all sunshine and parties on this 14-track album with songs “Party at my Mama’s House,” and “Whole Foods.” Every song on the album has full-song listening value, but Yung Gravy pops his collar on his favorite track “Always Saucy” featuring Ski Mask the Slumpgod and TrippythaKid, “Bag of Chips” featuring Bobby Raps, the bbno$ collabo “jack money bean,” “yup!” and the braggadocious “Gas Money.”

He knows his trap rap history, too. On “Drip on My Dresser” with Drill god Chief Keef co-starring, he pays homage to rap legend Project Pat’s 1999 hit “Out There” when he raps, “Blunt to my left, one for them kids / That turn on this song, in everybody’s whip.”

The “Alley Oop” rapper has come a long way from being the mild-mannered guy working a day job at a start-up accelerator company, while tapping into his alter ego, the saucy anonymous rapper, during his free time. Yung Gravy has used every album as an opportunity to grow in his craft, gracefully transforming into a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

Equipped with his love for the disco era, the Bee Gees, and Haddaway’s “What is Love,” Yung Gravy is not intimidated by the O.G. status that he’s been anointed with by fans and critics. In fact, he knows his lane and represents it well.

This is why Yung Gravy is so unique. He didn’t come into the rap game disrespecting it. But, he came in with a true desire to make hip hop fun again and to bring a different perspective to the genre.

The timing of Gasanova couldn’t be any better with the onslaught of the presidential elections and constant threat of COVID-19, we all need someone to take the edge off with happy vibes and it looks like Yung Gravy is up for the challenge.

Gasanova is out for your listening pleasure on all streaming platforms.
