Hate him or love him, streaming entrepreneur DJ Akademiks is among the first of the digital revolution to successfully capitalize on his online commentary independently of a major backer.
He’s expanded from a YouTuber informing a hip hop fanbase about the underground Chicago drill scene to landing paid sponsorships and gigs with well-known music entities. Always a connoisseur of new technology, he’s currently breaking down hip hop affairs on his Twitch profile, Instagram and his YouTube gaming page.
His rise in the new era of hip hop journalism has elevated his coins significantly — significantly enough to grant him trips around the country. On his way to Miami, the opinionated commentator was stopped in the airport by an employee who happened to be a fan. He inquired about how Ak became successful and the former 9 to 5er had the following advice about being a social media boss:
It’s all about consistency. The first videos I used to upload would get like 300 views. Bro, after awhile, it will get there. It’s all about building an audience.
Don’t be ashamed. Be yourself. If you like movies, talk about [expletive] movies. Put your personality into it.
Detach yourself from money. Have other things that’s going to support you. Here’s the thing, if you work towards the money you’re always going to fail. Work towards the vision.
Don’t be scared to fail. A lot of times, people are embarrassed of being in the moment where you’re working towards something and you don’t know what’s coming.
Just do it. You got to start making sacrifices — and do it with reasonable expectations because success is exponential.
A lot of times when you’re making it, you got to be seen as a lame n—a. I’m telling you. I’ve been on FaceBook recently — and you know how many people was curving me? Bro, I went back on there and everybody was like, ‘Oh [expletive], oh we love you.’
People are attracted to success.
